The UK government has announced an exemption for some dual citizens from new passport rules that had caused significant travel disruption. The policy, which requires passports to be issued within the last 10 years and have at least three months' validity remaining on the date of departure from certain countries, was implemented in late 2025.

Following reports of travelers being denied boarding, the government clarified that dual nationals of the UK and another country traveling on a non-UK passport are exempt from the '10-year rule'. They must still ensure their passport is valid for the entirety of their stay in the UK. The change was confirmed by the UK Home Office in early 2026.

Immigration advocacy groups had criticized the initial rollout for a lack of clear communication, leading to confusion and last-minute cancellations. The government states the rules are intended to align with standards used by many other nations and improve border security.
