Britain has deployed a new low-cost missile system to the Middle East to strengthen protection against drone attacks targeting UK forces, citizens, and regional partners, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on Saturday, May 16, 2026.
The system, developed by Thales UK, is designed to counter unmanned aerial vehicles at a fraction of the cost of traditional air defense missiles. The MoD stated that the deployment is part of ongoing efforts to enhance security in the region.
Defence Secretary John Healey said: 'This new system will help protect our personnel and interests from the growing threat of drones, which are increasingly used by hostile actors.' The exact location of the deployment has not been disclosed for operational security reasons.
The missile system is reportedly capable of engaging multiple drone threats simultaneously and can be operated with minimal training. The MoD confirmed that the system has been tested successfully in the UK before deployment.
