The National Forestry Authority (NFA) has announced the transfer of management and administrative responsibilities of Bugoma Forest to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), effective immediately. The handover aims to strengthen security and conservation efforts in the forest, which has faced threats from encroachment and illegal activities.
According to a statement from NFA, the transition is part of a broader strategy to leverage UWA's expertise in managing protected areas. Bugoma Forest, located in Kikuube District, is a vital ecosystem and habitat for endangered species such as chimpanzees.
UWA officials have confirmed that they will deploy additional rangers and implement enhanced surveillance measures to protect the forest. The move has been welcomed by local conservation groups, who hope it will reduce deforestation and poaching.
