At least five people have contracted Ebola in Uganda, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Saturday, as a new outbreak ravages its neighbor the Democratic Republic of Congo with 750 suspected cases and at least 177 deaths.
The outbreak in Congo was declared on April 23, 2026, according to WHO reports. The Ugandan cases are believed to be linked to cross-border transmission from the Congo outbreak.
Health authorities in both countries are working to contain the spread, with vaccination campaigns underway in affected regions. The WHO has deployed teams to support surveillance and contact tracing.
The outbreak is the latest in a series of Ebola epidemics in Central Africa, with the 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak being the deadliest on record.
