The World Congress of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), the global network representing local and regional governments, is set to take place in Tangier, Morocco. The event brings together mayors, elected officials, and local government representatives from around the world to discuss urban governance, sustainable development, and territorial cohesion.
UCLG, known in French as CitΓ©s et Gouvernements Locaux Unis (CGLU), holds its World Congress every three years. The Tangier congress is considered a key moment for advancing the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with particular emphasis on the role of municipalities and regional authorities in implementing global development agendas at the local level.
Mexico, through its national association of municipalities and local governments, has highlighted the strategic importance of the Tangier congress for territorial development objectives. Mexican local government representatives are expected to participate actively, sharing experiences from Latin America on decentralization, urban planning, and community-led development initiatives.
The UCLG World Congress serves as a platform for adopting resolutions and declarations that shape the global local government agenda. Discussions are expected to cover climate action, digital governance, inclusive cities, and financing for local development β themes central to both the 2030 Agenda and the New Urban Agenda adopted at Habitat III.
