Two people were injured on Wednesday, April 16, 2026, following an exchange of gunfire between Buffalo police officers and a robbery suspect. The incident occurred in the 100 block of Bailey Avenue on the city's East Side.
According to Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia, officers responded to a reported robbery at a business around 1:30 p.m. The suspect fled the scene and was located by officers a short time later. An encounter ensued, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
A 28-year-old male suspect was shot and transported to Erie County Medical Center in critical condition. A 26-year-old female bystander was also struck by gunfire and taken to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No police officers were injured.
The New York State Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation has opened an inquiry into the incident, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings in the state. The investigation remains ongoing.
