Tunisia is intensifying efforts to diversify its export markets, with a strategic focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. According to the Tunisian Ministry of Trade and Export Development, the country aims to increase the share of its exports to African markets from the current 2% to 10% by 2026. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce dependence on traditional European partners.
Key sectors targeted include agri-food, pharmaceuticals, construction materials, and electrical components. The Tunisian Export Promotion Center (CEPEX) has organized trade missions to countries such as Senegal, Ivory Coast, and Ghana to explore opportunities. In 2025, Tunisia's exports to Africa reached approximately 1.2 billion Tunisian dinars, a 15% increase from the previous year, according to CEPEX data.
Challenges remain, including logistics, financing, and competition from other North African countries. However, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) offers a framework for reducing tariffs and simplifying customs procedures, which could accelerate Tunisia's market access. The Tunisian government has also launched a support program for SMEs to help them meet quality standards and adapt products to local demand.
