Transpower, New Zealand's grid operator, has issued a grid emergency notice due to a polar blast sweeping the country, which has significantly increased electricity demand for heating. The notice, issued on August 5, 2026, is the first stage of its emergency procedures.
In a statement, Transpower requested that power companies ensure their energy and reserve offers are accurate, and increase their offers where possible. It also asked generators to increase transmission offers where generation could be constrained, and to ensure wind generation forecasts are accurate.
The polar blast has brought cold temperatures and snow to many parts of the country, leading to a surge in electricity use. Transpower's notice is a precautionary measure to ensure the grid remains stable and to avoid potential blackouts.
Consumers are being urged to conserve energy where possible, although no power cuts have been reported so far. The notice will remain in effect until the weather system passes and demand returns to normal levels.
