According to verified data from the French Banking Federation (FBF) and the European Central Bank (ECB), the three largest banking groups in France—BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole, and Société Générale—collectively held approximately 58% of the total assets of the French banking sector as of the end of 2025. This concentration reflects a long-standing trend in the industry.
BNP Paribas led with assets exceeding €2.7 trillion, followed by Crédit Agricole Group at around €2.1 trillion, and Société Générale at about €1.5 trillion. Together, these institutions dominate retail, corporate, and investment banking activities in France and across Europe.
The data, released in early 2026, shows that the top three banks' share has remained stable since 2023, with minor fluctuations due to mergers and acquisitions. The FBF noted that this concentration is typical for mature banking markets and does not necessarily reduce competition, as smaller regional banks and online lenders continue to grow.
Regulators, including the Autorité de Contrôle Prudentiel et de Résolution (ACPR), monitor these institutions closely to ensure financial stability and fair competition. The ECB's Single Supervisory Mechanism also oversees the largest banks in the eurozone.
