President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG) to include electric vehicles (EVs). The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, in a statement on Thursday, March 27, 2026.
The initiative, originally launched to promote the adoption of CNG as a cheaper and cleaner alternative to petrol, will now also focus on accelerating the development, manufacturing, and deployment of EVs across Nigeria. This expansion aims to diversify the country's energy transition strategy and reduce transportation costs.
According to the presidential statement, the move is part of a broader effort to position Nigeria at the forefront of the green economy. The government plans to implement supportive policies, including incentives for local assembly and ownership of electric vehicles, to drive this new phase of the initiative.
