TikTok has removed approximately 780,000 accounts belonging to users under the age of 16 in Indonesia. The action was taken to comply with the country's new Ministerial Regulation No. 11 of 2024 concerning the Protection of Children's Personal Data in Electronic Systems, which came into effect in late 2025.
The regulation mandates that digital platforms verify user ages and obtain parental consent for users under 16. It is part of a broader effort by the Indonesian government, led by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo), to enhance child safety and data privacy online.
In a statement, a TikTok spokesperson confirmed the account removals were a direct result of the new rules. The platform stated it uses a combination of technology and user reporting to identify underage accounts and is working to implement age verification tools.
This move follows similar regulatory pressures on social media platforms globally. Indonesia, with its vast young digital population, represents a significant market where such enforcement actions have a major impact on platform operations and user access.
