Tauranga City Council is consulting on proposed changes to cemetery and cremation fees, aiming to make cremation more affordable for local families. The council, which operates Tauranga's only crematorium, has suggested reducing the adult cremation fee by approximately $200, from $1,195 to $995, according to a council report.
To offset the reduction, the council proposes increasing burial charges by several thousand dollars. For example, the cost of a new burial plot would rise from $2,500 to $4,500, and interment fees would increase from $1,500 to $2,500. The changes are intended to reflect the true cost of services and ensure the cemetery fund remains sustainable.
The consultation follows reports that some families are choosing cheaper cremation options in Hamilton, where fees are lower. The council hopes the new pricing will encourage more local use of its crematorium. Public submissions on the proposal are open until June 15, 2026.
