The Government of Tanzania has tabled a 2.5 trillion shilling (approximately $1.6 billion) budget for the energy sector for the 2026/27 financial year. The budget was presented by the Minister for Energy, January Makamba, in the National Assembly in Dodoma. The plan outlines key priorities to stabilize the supply of petroleum products and ensure reliable electricity generation and distribution across the country.
Minister Makamba stated that a significant portion of the budget is allocated to completing strategic national projects. This includes the construction of the 2,115 MW Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) and expanding the national electricity grid. The government also plans to increase the capacity of fuel storage facilities to maintain a 90-day strategic reserve, aiming to shield the economy from global price shocks and supply disruptions.
Further allocations are directed towards accelerating the implementation of natural gas projects for domestic use and power generation, as well as promoting renewable energy sources. The budget framework is designed to support Tanzania's industrialization agenda and economic growth by providing a stable and affordable energy supply. The parliamentary session will now debate the proposed budget before its approval.
