GENEVA — Tanzania participated in the 3rd United Nations Virtual Worlds Day, held in Geneva, Switzerland, on May 10-11, 2026. The delegation was led by the Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Angellah Jasmine Mbelwa Kairuki.
The event, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), focused on the governance and development of virtual worlds, including metaverse technologies. Minister Kairuki highlighted Tanzania's commitment to leveraging digital technologies for sustainable development and bridging the digital divide.
During the conference, Tanzania shared its national digital transformation strategy and explored partnerships for capacity building in virtual reality and artificial intelligence. The minister also met with ITU officials to discuss technical assistance for Tanzania's digital infrastructure projects.
This participation marks Tanzania's growing role in global technology policy discussions, particularly in shaping inclusive and equitable virtual world frameworks. The UN Virtual Worlds Day aims to foster international cooperation on standards, ethics, and accessibility in immersive digital environments.
