Tab Baldwin, former head coach of the New Zealand Tall Blacks and the Ateneo Blue Eagles basketball team in Manila, has resigned following the drowning of two players during a training exercise. The incident occurred on June 13, 2026, in the Philippines, according to statements from Ateneo de Manila University.
The university confirmed that the two athletes, whose names have not been publicly released, died while participating in a conditioning drill at a local body of water. Baldwin, who also coached the Philippine national team, submitted his resignation on June 15, 2026, which the university accepted.
Baldwin had been with Ateneo since 2014, leading the Blue Eagles to multiple championships. The university expressed condolences to the families and stated it is cooperating with authorities in the investigation.
