On April 24, 2026, Swiss Federal Councillor and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Ignazio Cassis met with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in Rabat to strengthen bilateral ties. During the meeting, Cassis reiterated Switzerland's support for Morocco's autonomy initiative for Western Sahara, describing it as a credible and serious effort to resolve the long-standing dispute.
The two officials signed a joint declaration to deepen cooperation in areas such as trade, renewable energy, and migration. Switzerland also announced a new development aid package of 50 million Swiss francs for Morocco, focusing on sustainable agriculture and water management.
Switzerland's position aligns with a growing number of countries that view Morocco's autonomy plan as a viable framework for a political solution under UN auspices. The visit marked the first high-level Swiss diplomatic mission to Morocco since 2023.
