The State Welfare and Institutions Department (SWID) recently observed World Down Syndrome Day on March 21 and World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. These annual United Nations-designated days aim to raise public awareness and promote the rights and inclusion of people with these conditions.

World Down Syndrome Day, marked each year on March 21, highlights the inherent dignity and valuable contributions of people with Down syndrome. The date, 3/21, symbolizes the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes the syndrome. For 2026, the global theme was "End The Stereotypes."

World Autism Awareness Day, observed on April 2, seeks to increase understanding and acceptance of autistic people. The 2026 theme, "Moving from Surviving to Thriving," emphasized the need for support systems that allow autistic individuals to lead fulfilling lives. SWID's activities for both days typically include informational campaigns and community engagement events.

These observances are part of broader efforts to advance the rights of persons with disabilities, as outlined in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which calls for leaving no one behind.
