Supercars officials cancelled the third and final race of the Taupō round on Sunday as Cyclone Vaianu bore down on New Zealand's North Island, raising safety concerns for competitors, officials, and spectators at the circuit.
Organisers had initially attempted to work around the deteriorating weather by moving the final race forward in the schedule in a bid to complete the event before conditions worsened. However, the approaching cyclone ultimately made it impossible to safely proceed, and the race was called off entirely.
The cancellation brought a premature end to what had been a competitive Supercars weekend at Taupō. New Zealand authorities had been monitoring Cyclone Vaianu closely, with warnings issued for much of the North Island ahead of the storm's expected arrival.
Supercars issued a statement confirming the decision was made with the safety of all involved as the primary concern. Teams and personnel were advised to make arrangements to leave the circuit and seek shelter ahead of the cyclone's arrival.
