A French sports lawyer has publicly affirmed the legal solidity of Morocco's victory in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Patrick Rode, a specialist in sports law, was a guest on the South African radio program "The National Pulse" on Omny FM, where he addressed the legal context of the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) decision to confirm Morocco as champion.
Rode's comments came in the wake of an official CAF investigation into the final match against Senegal. The investigation, concluded in late 2025, reviewed match officiating and dismissed formal complaints, ultimately upholding the result. The lawyer explained that CAF's disciplinary bodies followed established statutes and procedures in their review, leaving no grounds for a successful legal challenge to the title.
The 2025 final, held in Morocco, was a tightly contested match that ended in a 1-0 victory for the host nation. The win marked Morocco's second AFCON title. Rode emphasized that while post-match disputes are common in high-stakes tournaments, the governing body's final and binding decision, reached through due process, solidifies the championship's legitimacy.
