Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente has identified Senegal as a potential surprise package for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to remarks reported by Spanish media on May 22, 2026. The 64-year-old tactician highlighted the African champions' blend of experience and emerging talent.
“Senegal is a team that has grown a lot in recent years. They have players in top European leagues and a solid collective game,” de la Fuente was quoted as saying during a press conference. He specifically mentioned Sadio Mané and Kalidou Koulibaly as key figures, though both are now in the latter stages of their careers.
The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature an expanded 48-team format. Senegal, who reached the Round of 16 in 2022, are drawn in Group H alongside Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea. Spain are in Group E with Germany, Japan, and a yet-to-be-determined playoff winner.
De la Fuente’s comments come as Spain prepare for a friendly against Senegal on June 5 in Madrid. The match will serve as a final test before the World Cup kicks off on June 11.
