Spanish authorities have detected calls on social media urging migrants to attempt a mass crossing into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on August 15, according to local officials. The Interior Ministry has reinforced border security in response to these appeals, which have circulated in recent days.
Ceuta, along with Melilla, are Spain's only land borders with Africa. The enclave has seen periodic waves of attempted crossings, often organized via social networks. In May 2021, thousands of migrants swam or waded across the border, prompting a diplomatic crisis with Morocco.
As of August 7, 2026, Spanish police have increased patrols and surveillance along the perimeter, including the use of drones and additional officers. The government has not confirmed any specific threat but stated that all necessary measures are in place to prevent an irregular entry.
Moroccan authorities have also been alerted, and cooperation between the two countries remains active. No major incident has been reported so far, but officials remain on high alert ahead of the mid-August date.
