A major investment of £102 million is being used to upgrade 16 GP surgeries across Somerset, aiming to improve healthcare access and facilities for patients. The funding, part of the government's Primary Care Recovery Plan, supports expansion and refurbishment projects to create more consulting rooms and modernize existing buildings.
The Somerset Integrated Care Board (ICB) is overseeing the program, which includes both new builds and extensions to current premises. Projects are at various stages, with some, like the expansion of the Frome Medical Centre, already completed and in use, while others are in the planning or construction phase.
The upgrades are designed to address growing patient lists and the need for more space to host additional staff and services, such as physiotherapy and mental health support, within local communities. Health officials state the investment will help reduce waiting times and provide a better environment for both patients and healthcare teams.
