In the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, a hair salon called 'Salon 86' has been operating continuously since 1986, maintaining its original decor and vintage hairstyling techniques. The salon, located on Spring Street, has become a local landmark for its commitment to the aesthetic of the 1980s.
Owner Maria Rossi, who opened the salon in 1986, told the New York Times in a 2024 interview that she has deliberately kept the salon's interior unchanged, including the original pink and black color scheme, vintage hair dryers, and posters of 1980s pop stars. 'People come here for the experience as much as the haircut,' she said.
The salon specializes in perms, mullets, and big hair, styles that were popular in the 1980s. Despite the changing trends in SoHo, which has transformed from an artist enclave to a luxury shopping destination, Salon 86 has maintained a steady clientele, including both longtime customers and younger clients seeking retro styles.
According to a 2025 feature in The Village Voice, the salon has been featured in several documentaries about New York City's changing neighborhoods. Rossi said she has no plans to update the salon's look, as it has become part of the neighborhood's character.
