Sofia Essaïdi, the French singer and actress who rose to fame on Star Academy in 2003, has opened up about the racist abuse and professional obstacles she encountered during her career in France. In interviews, she has described receiving racist letters and facing a music industry that struggled to accept a woman of North African descent in mainstream French pop.
Essaïdi was born in Paris in 1984 to a Moroccan father and a French mother. After finishing third on Star Academy's third season, she built a career in music and musical theatre, most notably starring in the stage musical Cléopâtre, la dernière reine d'Égypte, for which she won a NRJ Music Award in 2010.
Despite these successes, Essaïdi has said that racism and typecasting limited the opportunities available to her, and that she eventually chose to step back from the French entertainment industry. She has since pursued projects abroad and focused on her personal life.
