RIYADH, Sept 19 (Reuters) - A large plume of smoke was visible near Riyadh's main airport on Saturday after booms were heard and Saudi Arabia sent alerts overnight warning of potential danger around the capital, amid an escalation in attacks by Yemen's Houthi movement.
Residents reported hearing loud explosions and seeing smoke rising near King Khalid International Airport. Saudi authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the cause of the smoke or any damage.
The alerts followed a series of cross-border attacks by the Iran-aligned Houthis, who have intensified strikes on Saudi territory in recent weeks. The Saudi-led coalition has previously intercepted drones and missiles targeting civilian infrastructure.
Flights at the airport were temporarily disrupted, according to local reports, though no casualties have been confirmed. The situation remains developing.
