World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open due to a right knee injury, the Italian announced on Sunday. The decision comes after consultations with his medical team and ahead of the US Open, which begins later this month.
In a statement, Sinner said, "After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati." He added that the injury is not related to the hip issue that forced him to miss the Paris Olympics.
Sinner, who won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open earlier this year, has been managing physical issues throughout the season. The Cincinnati Open, a key hard-court tune-up for the US Open, will now proceed without the top seed.
The Italian's withdrawal opens the door for other players in the draw, with the tournament set to begin on August 12. Sinner's team has not yet confirmed whether he will be ready for the US Open, which starts on August 24.
