SINGAPORE: The temperature in Singapore fell to 20.1 degrees Celsius on Friday (June 12), the lowest recorded so far in 2026, according to the Meteorological Service Singapore. The reading was taken at the weather station in Newton at 12.52pm.
This drop provided a brief reprieve from the sweltering heat associated with the El Niño weather phenomenon, which has affected the region. The previous low for the year was 20.4°C, recorded in January.
While 20.1°C is unusually cool for Singapore, it does not break the all-time record low of 19.0°C, set in 1934. The Meteorological Service noted that such cool spells are rare but can occur during the southwest monsoon season, especially with heavy rain and cloud cover.
Residents took to social media to share their surprise and enjoyment of the cooler weather, with some donning sweaters and jackets. However, temperatures are expected to rise again in the coming days as the El Niño effect persists.
