Bret Taylor, co-founder and CEO of the enterprise AI startup Sierra, has stated his belief that the fundamental way humans interact with software is poised for a major shift. In a recent interview, Taylor argued that the era of navigating applications by clicking buttons and menus is coming to an end, to be replaced by conversational AI agents.
Sierra, which Taylor co-founded with former Google executive Clay Bavor, builds AI agents designed to handle complex customer service and commerce interactions for large companies. The company emerged from stealth in March 2024 with $110 million in funding from investors including Sequoia Capital and Benchmark.
Last month, the company launched a product called Ghostwriter, an AI agent specifically designed to autonomously manage customer service issues for businesses. Taylor's vision centers on these AI agents performing multi-step tasks and making decisions within defined parameters, moving beyond simple chatbots to act on a user's behalf.
The CEO's comments reflect a broader industry trend towards agentic AI, where systems can execute tasks from start to finish. However, this shift also raises ongoing discussions about the need for robust safeguards, transparency, and user control as AI takes on more autonomous roles in business processes.
