The Town of Sidney, British Columbia, has installed a series of new interpretive signs along its waterfront and downtown areas, offering a self-guided tour of the community's history and Indigenous heritage. The signs, unveiled in June 2026, highlight key sites such as the historic Sidney Pier and the nearby SȾÁ,UTW̱ (Tsawout) First Nation territory.
According to the Town of Sidney's official website, the project was developed in collaboration with local historians and the W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council to ensure accurate representation of the area's cultural significance. Each sign includes bilingual text in English and the SENĆOŦEN language, reflecting the region's Indigenous roots.
Mayor Cliff McNeil-Smith stated, 'These signs are a step toward reconciliation and a way for everyone to appreciate the deep history of this land.' The initiative was funded through a grant from the British Columbia Heritage Foundation.
