According to multiple reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors are likely to appoint Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of the Indian men's T20I team, replacing Suryakumar Yadav. The decision is expected to be finalized when the selection committee meets to pick squads for upcoming international fixtures after the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL).
Suryakumar Yadav, who has led India in 16 T20Is since taking over from Rohit Sharma in 2023, has a win record of 68.75% as captain. However, the team's performance in recent series, including a 2-1 loss to South Africa in November 2025, has prompted the selectors to consider a change. Shreyas Iyer, who captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and has led India in 5 T20Is, is seen as a strong candidate due to his tactical acumen and consistent batting form.
The BCCI has not made an official announcement yet, but sources indicate that the change is aimed at building a long-term leadership structure ahead of the 2028 T20 World Cup. Iyer, 31, has scored 1,104 runs in 51 T20Is at an average of 30.66, with a strike rate of 136.97. His experience as a captain in domestic and franchise cricket is considered a key factor in the decision.
