Swapo Secretary General Sophia Shaningwa has dismissed speculation that she intends to unseat party president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. Speaking at a Swapo Women’s Council event held in Nandi-Ndaitwah’s home village of Okongo on Saturday, Shaningwa addressed the rumours directly.
“There is no such plot,” Shaningwa said, according to local media reports. She urged party members to focus on unity and the tasks ahead, rather than internal divisions.
The event in Okongo was part of the Women’s Council’s outreach activities, aimed at mobilising women in the region. Nandi-Ndaitwah, who is also Namibia’s Vice President, has been party president since 2024.
Political analysts note that such speculation is not uncommon in the run-up to party congresses, but no official challenge has been announced. The Swapo leadership has called for calm and discipline within the ranks.
