Senegalese internationals Idrissa Gana Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye have been presented with symbolic replicas of the Africa Cup of Nations trophy by their respective clubs. The players were part of the Senegal squad that won the 2021 AFCON but missed the 2023 tournament due to injury.
Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye received his commemorative trophy in a ceremony at Goodison Park ahead of a Premier League match. The club stated it was to honor his contribution to Senegal's historic first AFCON title win in 2021.
Similarly, Marseille forward Iliman Ndiaye was presented with his symbolic trophy at the Stade VΓ©lodrome. Ndiaye, who joined Marseille in 2023, was also absent from the 2023 AFCON due to injury but was a squad member for the 2021 victory.
The gestures by Everton and Marseille are seen as a recognition of the players' national team achievements, even though they could not participate in the most recent continental championship. The original AFCON trophy remains with the Senegalese Football Federation.
