Mame Moussa Cissé, head coach of the Senegal women's national football team (the Lionnes), has set a target of reaching the semifinals at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). However, his position remains uncertain following a series of inconsistent performances, according to reports from Senegalese media.
The 2026 WAFCON tournament is scheduled to be hosted by Morocco from July 5 to 26, 2026. Senegal has been drawn in Group B alongside Ghana, Tanzania, and Tunisia. Cissé's contract with the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) is reportedly under review, with federation officials expressing concern over the team's recent form in friendlies and qualifiers.
In a recent interview with Le Soleil, Cissé stated, 'Our objective is clear: to reach the semifinals. We have the talent and the determination to compete with the best teams in Africa.' The Lionnes have not advanced past the group stage in the last two WAFCON editions (2022 and 2024).
The FSF has not publicly commented on Cissé's future, but sources close to the federation indicate that a decision will be made after the tournament. Senegal's opening match is against Ghana on July 8, 2026, in Rabat.
