According to a report by Sud Quotidien, the Senegalese government has refused to cover the salary of Pape Thiaw, the former head coach of the Senegal national football team, the Lions of Teranga. The decision was communicated in a letter from the Minister of Sports to the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF).
The government argues that Thiaw's contract was signed directly with the FSF, not the state, making the federation responsible for his compensation. This stance has left Thiaw without his agreed-upon salary, as the FSF reportedly lacks the funds to pay him.
Pape Thiaw, who previously served as an assistant coach, was appointed interim head coach in 2024 and later confirmed in the role. He led the team through several matches, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. However, his tenure ended in early 2026 following a series of disappointing results.
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between the Senegalese government and the FSF over financial responsibilities. As of July 30, 2026, no resolution has been announced, and Thiaw's legal team is reportedly considering options to recover the unpaid wages.
