DAKAR β The Senegalese Judo and Associated Disciplines Federation (FSJDA) has announced its ambition to turn the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) into a "lasting legacy for Senegalese judo" through youth training and infrastructure development, according to a statement released on July 20, 2026.
The federation, led by President Abdoulaye Diao, outlined plans to use the YOG as a catalyst for expanding judo's reach across the country. Key initiatives include establishing training centers in multiple regions and offering scholarships for young athletes. The FSJDA aims to increase participation among Senegalese youth, particularly in underserved areas.
Dakar 2026, scheduled for October 22 to November 9, will be the first Youth Olympic Games held in Africa. The event is expected to draw thousands of young athletes from around the world, with judo being one of the featured sports. The FSJDA's strategy aligns with the International Olympic Committee's goal of leaving a social and sporting legacy in host cities.
Infrastructure projects include renovating existing dojos and building new ones in regions such as Thiès and Saint-Louis. The federation also plans to train 200 new coaches and referees by 2028, ensuring the sport's growth continues after the Games. Funding for these initiatives comes from a combination of government support and private sponsorships.
The FSJDA's announcement comes as Senegal prepares for the YOG, with the country investing heavily in sports facilities and youth programs. The federation hopes that the legacy of Dakar 2026 will inspire a new generation of judokas and strengthen Senegal's position in African judo.
