Senegal national team coach Pape Thiaw has outlined precise shortcomings that need correction following the team's performances during the March 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification window. Speaking after matches, Thiaw emphasized the need for tactical adjustments and improved efficiency in front of goal.
In a press conference, Thiaw was quoted using the phrase "il y a eu des dΓ©chets" (there was waste), directly referencing missed opportunities and a lack of clinical finishing from his players during the recent fixtures. His comments followed Senegal's 1-0 victory over Gabon and a 0-0 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The coach's analysis focused on the team's inability to convert possession and chances into a greater number of goals, despite securing positive results. He stressed that addressing these issues is critical for the team's progression in the World Cup qualifiers and future tournaments.
Thiaw, who took over the managerial role in 2024, is now tasked with refining the team's attacking play before the next round of qualifiers. The Senegalese Football Federation has backed his technical assessment as the team aims to secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup.
