Three Senegalese football supporters, who had been detained in Morocco since the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final in February 2022, returned to Senegal on May 7, 2026, to a jubilant welcome. The fans were arrested following clashes after Senegal's victory over Egypt in the final match.
Their release followed diplomatic negotiations between Senegal and Morocco. The Senegalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the return, stating that the three men were in good health and reunited with their families.
Upon arrival at Blaise Diagne International Airport in Dakar, the supporters were greeted by cheering crowds, family members, and government officials. Videos on social media showed emotional scenes as the men stepped off the plane.
The detention had been a point of contention between the two countries, with Senegalese authorities repeatedly calling for their release. The successful resolution marks a positive step in bilateral relations.
