Since Senegal adopted a law in March 2026 doubling prison sentences for homosexuality, the French association Stop Homophobie has reported a surge in requests for help. According to the organization, about fifty humanitarian visa applications have been submitted to French authorities by Senegalese individuals fearing persecution.
The law, which increased penalties to up to 10 years in prison, has drawn international criticism. Stop Homophobie, based in France, has been assisting with legal and psychological support, as well as visa procedures for those at risk.
French authorities have not publicly commented on the number of visa applications received. The situation remains tense for LGBTQ+ individuals in Senegal, where homosexuality is already illegal under colonial-era laws.
