PETALING JAYA: Every three days, someone is told they have won a lucky draw, only to end up buying heavily overpriced products, according to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry. Such dubious 'scratch and win' schemes have been rising over the past five years.
The ministry's enforcement director, Azman Adam, said that from 2021 to 2025, a total of 1,825 cases were recorded, with losses amounting to RM 12.3 million. In 2025 alone, 420 cases were reported, with losses of RM 3.1 million.
Victims are typically approached in public places and told they have won a prize, but must purchase a product to claim it. The products are often low-quality items sold at inflated prices. The ministry advises the public to be wary of such offers and to report suspicious activities.
