Russia launched a major air assault on Ukraine overnight, using drones and missiles to strike multiple regions in what officials described as the deadliest such attack in months. Ukrainian authorities reported that at least 17 people were killed and dozens more were injured in the strikes.
The attack involved waves of Iranian-designed Shahed drones and various types of missiles, including cruise and ballistic missiles, targeting energy infrastructure and residential areas. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted a significant number of the incoming projectiles, but many reached their targets.
Among the hardest-hit areas was the southern port city of Odesa, where officials reported multiple casualties and significant damage to civilian infrastructure. Other regions, including Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, also reported strikes and casualties.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, calling for increased international support and air defense systems. The assault has exacerbated the humanitarian situation, with emergency services working to rescue people from rubble and restore critical services.
