A Malaysian High Court heard that more than 12,000 pieces of jewellery, valued at approximately RM443 million, were seized from a luxury condominium in 2018. The items were taken from Pavilion Residences in Kuala Lumpur as part of the investigation into the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) state fund scandal.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Foo Wei Min testified about the seizure during the corruption trial of Rosmah Mansor, the wife of former Prime Minister Najib Razak. The raid, conducted by the police's anti-money laundering unit, was one of the largest seizures of luxury goods in the country's history.
The trial relates to Rosmah Mansor's alleged solicitation and receipt of bribes concerning a solar hybrid energy project for rural schools in Sarawak. The prosecution has presented evidence, including the seized jewellery, to support its case. Both Najib Razak and Rosmah Mansor have faced multiple charges linked to the multi-billion dollar 1MDB scandal, with Najib already serving a prison sentence.
The court proceedings continue to detail the scale of assets allegedly amassed through funds misappropriated from 1MDB. International investigations into the scandal have led to recoveries and settlements worth billions of dollars worldwide.
