Born on October 14, 1939, in Saint John, Robert was the son of industrialist K.C. Irving. He joined the family business in the 1960s and became CEO of Irving Oil in 1972, a position he held until 2010. Under his leadership, the company expanded its refining capacity and retail network across Eastern Canada and the Northeastern United States.
Irving was also known for his philanthropic work, particularly in education and healthcare. He donated millions to the University of New Brunswick and the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation. In 2014, he was appointed to the Order of Canada for his contributions to business and community.
He is survived by his wife, Jean, and their three children. The family has requested privacy during this time and suggested donations to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation in lieu of flowers.
