Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday defended the police's handling of student protests at the Centre for Justice and Peace (CJP) in Delhi, stating that the action was taken in accordance with legal procedures and to ensure the safety of all students. The protests, which began earlier this week, were against the university's decision to suspend several students over alleged disciplinary issues.
Speaking to reporters, Rijiju said, "The police acted responsibly and within the framework of the law. Their primary concern was to prevent any escalation of violence and to protect the campus community." He added that the administration is open to dialogue with the students to resolve the matter amicably.
However, student leaders have accused the police of using excessive force and have demanded an independent inquiry. The university administration has not yet commented on the allegations, but a statement is expected soon.
