Rex Heuermann, the man accused of being the Gilgo Beach serial killer, is expected to plead guilty to multiple murder charges, according to sources familiar with the case. The plea change is anticipated to be entered in a Suffolk County court, potentially avoiding a lengthy trial.

Heuermann, a 60-year-old architect from Massapequa Park, was arrested in July 2023 and charged with the murders of three women: Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, and Amber Costello, whose remains were found near Gilgo Beach on Long Island over a decade ago. He has also been charged with the murder of a fourth victim, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, and is the prime suspect in other unsolved cases.

The investigation, which had been stalled for years, was reignited by a new task force and the use of advanced forensic techniques, including genetic genealogy. The expected guilty plea would bring a measure of closure to one of the most notorious serial murder investigations in New York history.

Prosecutors have built a case based on cell phone data, DNA evidence, and witness testimony linking Heuermann to the crimes. An official announcement regarding the plea is expected imminently from the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.
