French automaker Renault has confirmed a significant reduction in its global engineering workforce. The company plans to cut approximately 2,400 engineering jobs over the next two years.
This reduction represents between 15% and 20% of its total engineering staff, which is estimated to number between 11,000 and 12,000 employees worldwide. The cuts are part of a broader strategic plan to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
The move is linked to Renault's transition towards electric vehicles and new software-defined vehicle architectures, which require different engineering skill sets. The company stated the reductions would be managed through voluntary departures and internal mobility, without forced layoffs in France.
This restructuring is a component of the "Renaulution" strategic plan launched by CEO Luca de Meo, aiming to streamline operations and improve profitability amidst intense competition in the auto industry's shift to electrification.
