A fast-moving fire destroyed a family home in rural Southland on May 15, 2026, according to Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). The blaze broke out at a farmhouse near the remote settlement of Otautau, approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Invercargill.
Eden Anderton and Devon Roman, along with their three children, were at home when the fire started. The children, who were already in the car, watched as flames engulfed the house moments after their mother opened the front door. FENZ crews arrived within 15 minutes, but the structure was already fully involved and could not be saved.
No injuries were reported, and the family escaped safely. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but FENZ has stated it is not considered suspicious at this stage. The family has been displaced and is receiving support from local community groups and the New Zealand Red Cross.
