Rabat, the capital of Morocco, has been officially named the UNESCO World Book Capital for 2026, following a selection process by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The designation recognizes the city's commitment to promoting books, reading, and cultural exchange.
As part of the celebrations, the Moroccan Ministry of Culture and the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) have strengthened their partnership to organize joint literary events, exhibitions, and programs throughout the year. The collaboration aims to enhance cultural ties between Morocco and the United Arab Emirates, particularly in the field of publishing and literacy.
The program for Rabat World Book Capital 2026 includes a series of activities focused on youth engagement, digital reading, and support for local authors and publishers. The initiative is expected to boost Morocco's cultural sector and attract international attention to its literary heritage.
UNESCO's World Book Capital program was launched in 2001, with Madrid being the first city to hold the title. Rabat follows Accra, Ghana (2023), and Strasbourg, France (2024), as the latest city to receive this honor.
