Rabat has been designated by UNESCO as the World Book Capital for 2026, a recognition that highlights the city's commitment to promoting books and reading. To mark this occasion, Barid Al-Maghrib, Morocco's postal service, has issued a commemorative postage stamp in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication.
The stamp features iconic landmarks of Rabat, including the Hassan Tower and the Chellah necropolis, symbolizing the city's rich cultural heritage. The initiative aims to celebrate the role of books in fostering dialogue and cultural exchange.
As part of the World Book Capital program, Rabat will host a series of events throughout 2026, including book fairs, literary festivals, and workshops, to promote reading among all age groups. The program is expected to boost local publishing and literacy efforts.
This designation places Rabat among a prestigious list of cities that have served as UNESCO World Book Capitals, such as Madrid, Beirut, and Kuala Lumpur. The official launch ceremony is scheduled for April 23, 2026, coinciding with World Book and Copyright Day.
