MANILA, Philippines — The Office of the Ombudsman's Field Investigation Bureau has recommended the filing of plunder and bribery charges against Sen. Rodante Marcoleta over alleged campaign donations amounting to P75 million.
In a complaint-affidavit, the bureau alleged that Marcoleta received P75 million in campaign donations from a company linked to illegal gambling operations, in violation of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act and the Plunder Law. The complaint was filed on May 22, 2026, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Marcoleta has denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated. He said the donations were legitimate and properly declared. The Ombudsman has not yet ruled on whether to proceed with the charges.
The case stems from a 2025 Senate inquiry into illegal gambling, where Marcoleta was accused of accepting money from operators. The Field Investigation Bureau's recommendation is the first step in a process that could lead to a formal indictment.
