A major scientific review has verified that plastics contain a complex and largely unregulated cocktail of chemicals. Research published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology identified over 16,000 chemicals present in plastic products, from food packaging to toys. Among these, more than 4,200 substances are classified as persistent, bioaccumulative, mobile, or toxic.

These chemicals, which include endocrine disruptors like bisphenols and phthalates, can leach into food, water, and the environment. Public health experts link exposure to such substances with increased risks of cancers, reproductive issues, and developmental problems in children. The study highlights a significant regulatory gap, as a substantial proportion of these chemicals are not adequately assessed for safety.

The pervasive nature of plastic pollution means these toxicants are now found globally, from remote oceans to human bloodstreams. Scientists are calling for increased transparency in chemical reporting and stronger international policies to phase out the most hazardous substances and manage plastic waste effectively.
